Weekly Skills Labs
As part of the internship experience, students participate in weekly skills labs that complement their veterinary rounds and provide structured, hands-on learning opportunities. Each session is designed to reinforce technical skills while supporting the specific learning goals of the intern group. By rotating through a variety of topics, students gain broad exposure to the daily practices and procedures essential in equine care and veterinary medicine.

Skills labs cover a wide range of techniques, including but not limited to:

  • Hoof packing and therapeutic applications

  • Standing and sweat bandages

  • Jogging and presenting horses for a veterinarian

  • Basic restraint methods and safety handling

  • Intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV) injections

  • Lunging techniques

  • Body clipping and grooming for competition

  • Surgical scrubbing and sterile preparation

  • Conformation evaluation and discussion

  • Braiding and mane pulling

These interactive labs allow students to not only learn proper technique but also to practice with guidance, ask questions in real time, and build confidence in their abilities. Together with veterinary rounds, the skills labs provide a well-rounded foundation in equine management, horsemanship, and veterinary support, ensuring that students are well-prepared for future academic and professional pursuits in the equine industry.
